Mais dans le même instant, il nous révèle sans fard, comme un être qui se caractérise par la finitude, la solitude et l'incertitude. Edward Wilmot Blyden (1832-1912) est né dans les Antilles britanniques et réside au Liberia d'où il partira en 1866 pour se rendre à Londres, puis à Malte et de là à Alexandrie, au Caire, au Liban et en Palestine.
Cultivé, imprégné des voyages antérieurs, de la Bible, attiré par la religion musulmane, il se montre sagace, attentif et particulièrement sociable auprès de protagonistes les plus divers. Sa position d'Afro-Américain le rend plus sensible à certaines situations. Il mentionne à plusieurs reprises les Africains qu'il a croisés, les fidèles d'une mosquée à Jérusalem, les pèlerins bambaras au Caire mais aussi des communautés généralement ignorées des auteurs occidentaux de l'époque, comme les coptes.
Les antiquités égyptiennes, fruit à ses yeux d'une civilisation africaine, sont l'objet d'une véritable passion qui l'expose à des savoureuses aventures semi-comiques. Ce voyage d'Afrique en Palestine est le récit singulier d'un auteur entre plusieurs cultures.
